Petra’s Planet is a game world designed for 6-to-12-year-olds for adventures within different cultures. The game world includes mini games for playing alone or with friends. Participate in different kinds of activities, get to know the characters in the virtual world, and collect items typical to each featured part of the world. Most importantly, Petra’s Planet is a place for meeting friends and making new acquaintances around the world.
The content of the game world provides fun and safe entertainment with which the child can simultaneously learn about cultures through the playing experience. The experiences offered by Petra’s Planet are linked with everyday activities, special festival moments, or local fairytales and even folklore. The games and tasks are all derived from real cultures, and authenticity has been the foundation when realising the virtual versions.

A child can create themselves a fun character with which to adventure in the game world. Petra acts as a counsellor, helping the child whenever he or she wishes to play a certain game or know more about a certain item in the game world. Petra’s Planet is an online environment, which means that the child can communicate with other players in real-time by symbol chat. The child can also take pictures as mementos of his or her adventures.
When the child wishes, he or she can play games, which can be found in all the areas of the game world. All the mini games have a cultural catch to them. Some of the games are designed for two or multiple players, so the child can play with other players, for example in a camel race or a boating regatta. Some of the games are designed for single play. The child can also participate in various activities in the game world by themselves or with others, for example making snowmen or jumping on a trampoline.
The goal for the player is to play the games and do activities to collect cultural experiences. Participation in local games as well as fixing a broken drum, for example, can increase the player’s points – they are all experiences within a culture, after all. The world is in a constant state of flux, so new experiences become available all the time, just like a person can always learn new things about any living culture.
The first locations available to visit on Petra’s Planet are two very different ones. Located in the westernmost tip of Africa, Senegal is a colourful and noisy place filled with the joy of life. Here the player gets to know local music along with the ways of life in a village and in the city. The player learns all about the local everyday life and leisure time through fun game missions. Alternatively, the child can head way up north to the land of the Sami, stretching into four countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Celebrate a wedding and a festival with the only indigenous people in the European Union, and also get a glimpse into the past of the Sami people.
After Senegal and the Sami country have been visited, the next environments to be introduced are Jordan in the Middle Eastern desert and the island of Sri Lanka, surrounded by the Indian Ocean. The aim with Petra’s Planet is to expand to adventure locations all around the world.
